6 Tips For Working On-The-Go
It’s quite frustrating sometimes, even anxiety-inducing, when you know you won’t be headed to the office for a couple of days. You might go on vacation with the family or a social event that takes up time from work. The thoughts that run through your mind aren’t about giving your brain a break, but about that list you have back at your desk waiting to be finished. Luckily, we live in the digital era. We have portable computers, cellphones, and the Internet. No more having to write everything out using a feathered ink pen and medieval paper made of cotton. Although always on the move, I feel that getting my assignments done in places other than my natural setting of home or work is a hassle. Don’t get me wrong, after a very productive day I feel like I climbed Mount Everest, but the thought of having to pack all of my belongings without forgetting important documents at the office is exhausting. I can’t fathom the thought of falling behind or realizing that I am late on a deadline because I didn’t take the necessary precautions. If you know you’ll be toiling on-the-go, below are six tips that will help your workday end successfully. Take these into consideration and your day will be 90 percent less stressful (because days are never really 100 percent stress-free):
1. Plan ahead:
This is crucial when it comes to working on-the-go. I can’t emphasize this enough. The night before, be sure to have all of the files you need (covered in step 5). This will make your life much easier. This is what makes organization so important. Even at a young age, we were taught to do this, from organizing our art bins to our clothes. It’s in our blood and you must admit that it does help a lot. One invaluable way to to this is to make sure your work bag is clean. You have plenty more things to worry about than having to rummage through your bag. You don’t want to feel cluttered.
2. Prioritize:
This is extremely important: make a to-do list. If you have a million and one things you need to get done, write them all down. Don’t be afraid to use that brain of yours. Also, number your list from most important to least. The first one with the closest deadline must get done first. You can also start a couple projects at the same time. Spend quality time with each project depending on the deadline. There is nothing wrong with getting a head start – remember that. Finally, don’t forget that there’s nothing as satisfying as checking an item off your to-do list. Productivity goes a long way.
3. Always bring your chargers:
As I stated earlier, we live in the digital age. I wish at least once a day that my phone didn’t die after three hours but, unfortunately, life isn’t perfect. Use a specific pocket in your work bag to dedicate to your phone and laptop chargers. An extra battery wouldn’t hurt either. You’ll never have to worry about your technology devices shutting off while in the middle of working, a nightmare that can be avoided with the necessary prep.
4. Buy wireless Wi-Fi:
This is such a great investment, especially if you know you will be going to a place without Internet connection. What bliss it is to be able to have Internet while on the train during your long commute, or even at a hotel where free Internet isn’t provided. You have the option to buy wireless hotspots at your cell phone carrier and Best Buy. Prices vary between $20 and $800 (crazy, I know).
5. Get Document Management Software:
If you’re looking for a way to perfect your on-the-go workday, document management software like is a necessity. Document management is a software solution that specializes in making your days much more efficient. This step goes hand-in-hand with Step 1 when it comes to planning and preparing for your day. Many companies that purchase this software for their team tend to be much more organized, which helps employees work in an effective manner. Not only can you upload any file type into this system, but also you can edit, highlight, make notes, and update your work along the way. The software itself is simple to use because files are found in a quick and fashionable manner. This is a lifesaver if you ever forget to pack a document. It also saves you the time of calling a coworker and giving them directions of a file’s location. The best part is, document management can be used on your mobile phone! It’s also 100 percent secure. Pricing for this software, depending on the package, begins at $25 a month.
6. Take a break:
I can’t stress this enough. You’re on the move for goodness sake. Give yourself a breather: enjoy a new restaurant, go for a walk, or even take a nap when you’re out of town. Don’t get too caught up in your work because you’ll have a system overload! All of the work you’re doing is just a rough draft anyway. Be sure to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. There’s no reason to stress when you’re on the road, on your vacation, or on the weekend. Sometimes you need to take your work with you, wherever you go, but nothing can stop you from being just as productive and efficient as you are at the office. Because, work isn’t nearly as much about where you do it as it is about what you accomplish at the end of the day.
